Reiki Demystified

Picture yourself floating in a tropical sea with the sun and cool breeze above you and a gentle sea moving cyclically beneath you.

No, this isn’t a description of that holiday you haven’t taken recently enough; the feeling you get relaxing in seawater is similar to the feeling of a Reiki treatment. With all your cares out the window, you’re left with a relaxation state so deep and intense, clients often need to be awakened by their Reiki practitioner.

Mikao Usui (1865 – 1926) taught Reiki to over 2,000 people during his lifetime. Eleven of these students continued their training to reach the Shinpiden level, a level equivalent to the Western third degree, or Master level.

Reiki may sound new agey, but it’s actually been around for thousands of years. Thought to have originated in Tibet, the practice was rediscovered in Japan towards the end of the 19th century, and these days, it’s finally receiving due scientific attention by prestigious research institutions.

So, what exactly is it? It’s hard to describe because everyone experiences it differently. In short, Reiki works like a thermostat regulating a body’s energy. The hands-on treatment flows slowly or rapidly—as needed—to dispense balancing energy. The fluctuations of energy churning within us can manifest themselves as pins-and-needles tingling, warm flashes, goosebumps, chills, or sleepiness during treatment.

Reiki sensations can be very subtle and even overlooked, but with continued practice most people will begin to notice even slight shifts of energy. It’s not unusual to feel nothing, but regardless, Reiki works whether you feel it or not.

Reiki can also be done remotely. To receive distance therapy, you don’t have to do anything in particular, but it’s best to lie down and be still. The effects of virtual healing are no different to a hands-on session, and an experienced Reiki practitioner can send healing energy to a person anywhere in the world no matter how far apart they are.

One can also experience a range of emotions post treatment so most therapists will do a follow up the next day just to see how you feel. Be sure to tell your therapist about any and all feelings that you’ve experienced as they are indicative of how the treatment worked and will possibly guide him/her in how to treat you at your next session.

Reiki can help:

  • Accelerate healing and recovery
  • Reduce stress and increase levels of relaxation
  • Balance energy flows in the body by releasing blockages
  • Relieve emotional distress by balancing and clearing emotions
  • Enable the individual to become more in tune with their higher self
  • Promote inner peace and harmony
