Recipe: Ultimate Acai Bowl

by Suzan Terzian, Certified Nutritionist, Health & Wellness Consultant

A great way to enjoy a plant based breakfast is to make yourself a smoothie bowl. My all time favorite smoothie bowl is the infamous Acai bowl. I absolutely LOVE it!

Acai berries are mostly grown in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest.  These dark-purple berries pack a nutrient punch with their antioxidant properties, with health benefits such as increased energy levels, a boosted immune system, and improved skin and nails.

However did you know that many bowls offered at different restaurants are loaded with sugar, making this healthy dish a lot less healthy?

Since I found it to be slightly OTT to have these berries delivered to my doorstep from Brazil, i found that the next best thing is using freeze dried Acai powder.  I get mine at the Organic Store in Abu Dhabi.

Acai Powder is the whole fruit dried and ground into a powder, preserving the antioxidants that whole Acai berries are known for.

Why not start your day making yourself a fun smoothie bowl for breakfast? It’s a lot easier than you think, but it’ll definitely  look fancy AND be loaded with goodness!

Prep time: 5 mins
Cook time: 5 mins
Ingredients
Smoothie
  • ⅔ cup frozen blueberries
  • ⅔ cup frozen strawberries
  • ½ banana
  • 1 teaspoon maca root powder
  • ¾ cup unsweetened almond mylk
  • 1 teaspoon acai powder
Toppings
  • ½ banana, sliced
  • fresh blueberries
  • fresh strawberries, sliced
  • chopped walnuts
  • goji berries
  • coconut flakes
Instructions
  1. Put all the smoothie ingredients into a blender
  2. If you are having trouble blending the mixture properly, then add a little more almond milk or water
  3. Blend until the smoothie is smooth 🙂
  4. Pour the smoothie mixture into a bowl
  5. Top with desired ingredients
  6. Enjoy!

If you like to boost the nutritional power of your smoothie bowl, why not add a teaspoon of the adaptogen superfood Maca root powder into the mix.  Maca has a pleasant taste and it’s benefits include a positive effect on hormone balance, energy levels, and it is an overall health booster.

Go ahead and try. My personal guarantee is that you’ll feel so good both emotionally and physically for taking care of yourself and boosting your nutrition. Let me hear what you think!
