Recently, I was researching almond flour recipes and came across a recipe for Blondies. A Blondie is essentially a Blonde Brownie. The recipe I had found online called for ½ cup of coconut oil and 1 cup of sugar. According to myfitnesspal.com a ½ cup coconut = 960 calories and 1 cup of sugar = 720 calories. I challenged myself to re-create the recipe omitting the above and decreasing the overall calorie content whilst keeping the delicious gooey Blondie consistency and texture. Baking with almond flour creates a dense, moreish Blondie, as you can see from the image. Allow them to cool before cutting into bite size pieces, this allows the mixture to set and easier to cut.

Who knew that the day would come where parents would schedule YOGA dates for their children? As we are living in the busiest and most stressful time in history, it only means that our children are getting also affected by this energy. If you ask me, YOGA is the best activity you can offer your kids. Had I known about yoga when I was younger and the positive effect it has, it would have helped me manage my expectation, thinking and emotions in many ways.

We love this new initiative from Intercare Health Center! A new ‘Wellbaby’ clinic starts this Thursday 13th October and runs every week.
To celebrate the launch this month, every session in October (for the next three Thursdays – 13th, 20th and 27th of October) will be absolutely FREE for anyone who attends for the first time. This will include a baby/young child (up to 4 years old) having their height/length measured, as well as their weight, and all of this will be plotted on a WHO Growth Chart. In addition to this, for all three of these sessions, their very experienced and senior midwife Vearle will be on hand to answer any questions and have a chat, also FREE of charge. The doctors, as well as members of the therapy team, will be around too, in case there are any further questions or assessments required.

Recent research has shown that gentle exercise like Pilates can be a vital part of recovery for breast cancer patients. Here are 5 easy exercises to try at any stage of recovery. Think of completing the exercises in two phases: first on their own then progressing with light resistance (i.e. weights or flex band). Keep repetitions low (5-8) and only go within a range of motion that feels comfortable for your body. If there is any pain then stop the movement.

September is around the corner and its time to get back into a routine, gently returning to your workouts and regular eating habits.
Try to eliminate high trigger allergens like dairy and gluten for a ten-day cycle and see how your body feels. Try to ease your digestion and start your day with warm water with a squeeze of lemon juice. For breakfast, whiz up a healthy smoothie to gently ease your digestion and boost your metabolism into gear.
Okay, admittedly it’s still far too hot to stand outside for long enough to even think about lighting a BBQ or grill, but it won’t be long before lots of us are doing just that and until then plenty of us are still enjoying grilled meats at brunches and restaurants.
Eating outside with friends is a fun, social pastime and not one I’m prepared to stop completely, but in recent years growing research has told us that cooking meat over a flame or frying at high temperatures increases our exposure to chemicals which can damage the DNA in our genes, possibly leading to certain cancers such as skin, liver and stomach cancer. The main culprits? Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). HCAs are created when high heat reacts with and changes the proteins in meat. PAHs are caused as juices and fat drips from meat into flames and the smoke caused rises and sticks to the meat; which we then eat. Adding certain spices and marinades can also change the chemical reactions that occur when meat is grilled.
With Ramadan fast approaching I’m being asked by clients how they can avoid falling into the trap of eating the wrong foods, as well as some of the associated problems such as headaches, constipation, low blood sugar levels and weight gain. Here are my top tips to having a healthy holiday!
- When you break your fast, drink water first! You will feel less hungry as your body’s fluids are replaced. Try to drink 8-10 cups before you sleep.
- Avoid sugary drinks; consider coconut water or water with lemon, honey and a pinch of salt to stay hydrated.
- Despite being hungry eat slowly and chew food well. It takes 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that you are full – put small portions on your plate first. Overeating can cause highs and lows in your blood sugar and dehydration.
